T.G.I.Freeday

Today is the day for the truth. Growing up, Friday was presented as a day for blowing off steam, drinking with friends, having a “good time.”

But living like that we don’t grow up.

According to the dominant narrative, a Friday should look like this:

SCENE: A crowded bar, music playing loudly, screens covering the walls showing sports. A group of friends huddled together, laughing, consuming beverages of different colors from glasses of varying shapes and sizes. In front of them are a few plates piled with nondescript fried items which they put into their mouths. At regular intervals each of them will disengage, assume an inanimate expression and interact with their smartphone.

That’s T.G.I.Friday.

T.G.I.Freeday might look more like this:

SCENE: A quiet room, a figure sitting alone reading a book. A glass of water is on a table. The reader is fully engaged.

If all this seems a little sudden, remember that those passing pleasures we cling to can be taken from us in an instant, with no warning whatsoever. It is a privilege to have this opportunity to offer them up freely and to try on that which endures.

God bless you and T.G.I.F.
